AAAAAA State tournament Superlatives

BEST FIRST ROUND GAME

Winder-Barrow at South Cobb

South Cobb cruised through the regular season with a 25-2 record on its way to a Region 6 championship. The Eagles were powered by Zocko Littleton Jr. (Pictured) in the backcourt along with Illinois State signee Emon Washington in the frontcourt. However, this isn’t going to be an easy first round game. Winder-Barrow comes in with a 17-11 overall record and has a talented 6-foot-10 junior big man in Isaiah Nelson-Ododa who can cause problems inside.

BEST LOOK-AHEAD GAME

Tri-Cities vs Tucker

What could possibly be better than a state championship rematch from last year? If all goes to plan, Tucker will get its shot at payback for last year’s title game when Tri-Cities hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to knock off the Tigers. Both teams are back and fully capable of making a deep run in the tournament, but only one of these can come out of the Elite 8 alive.

BEST PLAYER MATCHUP

Patrick Carter (Langston Hughes) vs EJ Smith (Cambridge)

There always some really good matchups in first round games between No. 2 and No. 3 seeds, but Cambridge taking on Langston Hughes is about as good as it gets for 6-A. Patrick Carter, a Campbell signee, has had a monster year for Langston Hughes, but E.J. Smith has come on really strong this year for Cambridge. Both players will need to be at their best for their team to advance out of the first round.

MOST INTRIGUING STORYLINE

Can South Cobb cut down the nets?

As we already mentioned, it’s been a really impressive year for Greg Moultrie’s South Cobb team. A 25-2 record with the only losses coming to 7-A powerhouse McEachern and a road game against region rival Sequoyah makes them one of the top teams in the state, regardless of class. Is this the year the Eagles finally breakthrough with a deep run to cutting down the nets?

MOST LIKELY TO MAKE A NAME

James White, Heritage-Conyers

Heritage-Conyers always has players and they are usually under the radar talents that don’t get the amount of attention that they should. If the Patriots can get hot and make a run, you can bet junior wing James White played a big role in it. He’s had a terrific year for Heritage and this is the exact stage he needs to become a household name in the Atlanta area.

SLEEPER TEAM TO MAKE A RUN

Chattahoochee

When you have a point guard that can get buckets like A.J. White and a talented 6-foot-6 wing alongside him like Rice signee Cam Sheffield, you’re going to have a chance to beat anybody. The 1-2 punch the Cougars have is as good as anybody in 6-A, but Chris Short’s team has plenty of help around them as well.
